What Exactly Does Pgd And Ivf Mean?

For many couples who have had problems having children and have looked for other options, will know exactly what Pgd and Ivf mean but for all of us who have had children with no problems, these terms might stump us. Pgd means Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis and Ivf means In-Vitro Fertilization. Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis is a specific way that doctors can examine embryos for any kind of genetic disorder before it gets implanted into the uterus. This kind of procedure is performed on couples who have had multiple miscarriages due to genetic disorders among other reasons.

The other reasons that couples might qualify to have this type of procedure done is to find out if a pregnancy has abnormal cells if they already have a child that has a genetic disorder. Many couples do not want to put another child through the pains of a disease so they can have the embryo's checked before the cells have become specialized so they can choose about abortion. This procedure can also be done for couples who have a child that may need a transplant of some sort and it allows the doctor to determine if the embryo would be a tissue match for the sick child. Using the Pgd And Ivf would allow the sick child to have transplanted cells in order to get better.

The Pgd And Ivf work together because once the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis is completed and the determination is negative, meaning that there is no genetic disorder found, then the embryo can be inserted withing the uterus using the in-vitro fertilization technique. This technique involves allowing the sperm fertilize the egg outside of the woman's body. Many couples cannot get pregnant due to a man's low sperm count or the capability of a woman's egg being fertilized so in order to make sure that the fertilization process does happen, an egg is extracted from the woman and sperm is taken from the man in order to put the two together manually.

The sperm is then introduced to the egg manually within a fluid medium. Then, this combination is put into the woman's uterus to start the growing process of a baby. Many people have their in-vitro process fail so they then have to go through the Pgd process to find out what the problem is and this is how the Pgd And Ivf work together. This technology has allowed many couples who were once not able to have children, to finally get their little miracle.
